Popcorn, presentation this week, fall camporee and nerf guns

Hello Troop 136!

From our Popcorn Kernel:
Popcorn Kernel Mr. Asendorf asks all scouts to start turning in any unsold popcorn Tuesday, Oct. 22 and to bring their sales sheets so that he can start getting scouts marked down for their sales. The last day of popcorn sales is Nov. 2 and all orders must be turned into Mr. Asendorf by Nov. 3. If you have question, please feel free to contact him personally at jasendorf@gmail.com or by text at 614-746-3746.  He would like to not have a repeat of last year where we turned in a significant amount of unsold popcorn at the last minute.

Nerf guns: We had a great time last week with our Nerf guns last week.  Please plan to bring your Nerf gun(s) and a bright flashlight this week.  The flashlight will be used for the game.  Plan to shoot for prizes this week. This is the last week for Nerf guns.

Here is our meeting plans for the next two weeks:

Presentation for this week:
This week's presentations will be given by Steve Yuzka.  He is a person friend of my wife and I and is someone that is very well respected in the shooting community.  He is a co-owner of The Powder Room.  This past summer, he was the range event director for the NRA National Pistol Championships at Camp Perry. He oversaw the competitive shooting for four different ranges all week. I have asked that he give an overview of shooting sports to the scouts next week. If you have questions that you want to ask, please let me know so that I can let him know the question that you might have before the meeting.

Fall Camporee October 25 to October 27:
Adults: I would like to have one or two more adults on this campout.  I know that Darryl said he might be able to cook for the adults.  He always does a great job!

Scouts: You will need sign up as going to the event and one of the five options as well.
Options for the scouts:
1.  For those scouts who are working toward First Class, you have the opportunity to sign off on some of the requirements for First Class.
2. Geocache Merit Badge - partial merit badge
3. Wilderness Survival Merit Badge  - partial merit badge
4. Search/Rescue Merit Badge  - partial merit badge
5. First Aid Merit Badge  - partial merit badge

Backpacking at Zaleski November 8 to November 10:
We are traveling to Zaleski next month for the backpacking trip.  This is a great event for first time scouts backpacking and for older scouts who have been backpacking.  Roland Guay and I will share how we pack with the troop on 10/29 and the scouts will be bringing their camping gear for a short hike on 11/5.

What if your scout does not have a backpack?  We have several of them that have been donated by previous scouts.  We will get these backpacks out and allow the scouts to try them on before the meeting on 10/22 and 10/29.  They will be able to take them home and come back on 11/5 with their gear packed. The scout will take the backpack they are borrowing with them and bring it back the on 11/5 fully loaded with their camping gear for a hike during the meeting. This will help determine if there are any issues with how they packed their gear.  It is a great way to find out if there are issues before we get on the trail.  The backpacks will be available for you to borrow on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If your scout wants to borrow one for this event, show up early on 10/22 and 10/29, and bring them back ready to hike on 11/5.

Zalekis trip details:  We will leave the church on Friday, November 8 at 5:30 and be back around noon to 1 pm on Sunday.  We will camp on Friday night near a place that we can get to easy and prepare for a hiking trip on Saturyday morning.

Troop Elections:

11/12 After the SPL elections and his selections for his PLC, there will be nominations for Patrol Leaders

Senior Patrol Leader
2097735_origWith three green bars behind the Scout emblem, the senior patrol leader’s shoulder patch symbolizes one of the oldest leadership positions in Scouting. The Boy Scouts of America has long recognized the senior patrol leader as the highest youth leadership position in a troop. They are the primary link between a troop’s Scouts and its adult leaders. They shoulder the responsibility for leading meetings of the troop and the patrol leaders’ council and provide valuable leadership in planning and carrying out the troop’s program of outdoor activities, service projects, and events.
Responsibilities
  • runs all troop meetings, events, activities, and the annual program planning conference
  • runs the patrol leaders’ council (PLC) meetings
  • appoints other troop junior leaders with the advice and counsel of the Scoutmaster
  • assigns duties and responsibilities to junior leaders
  • assists the Scoutmaster with junior leader training
  • sets a good example
  • wears the Scout uniform correctly
  • lives by the Scout Oath and Law
  • shows Scout spirit
