 Hi Troop 136!

  
High Adventure 2024:
As noted from our short meeting last week, there seems to be enough people for two treks to Florida Sea Base.  I know a few people who are interested in Philmont next year as well.  I would suggest many of you go to Sea Base for your first high adventure and then think about Northern Tier, Summit and Philmont after that.  Lots of great activities for you to do!

Marengo Caves this past weekend:
Last weekend was great weather and a fun three hour tour into the cave.  We had a blast and it was something to remember.

Next events:
MapleFest Campout March  3-5:
We have participated in this service project for several years. I reserved the Chase Lodge cabin for Friday and Saturday night. Sign up by February 21st. Please bring your form or complete one at the meeting. Still missing these forms!  This is important and helps us plan for the meals!  Henry Ciocca has volunteered to be the cook this weekend! He will need help.

March 31-April 2 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame visit and camp at Camp Manatoc:
We will travel to Camp Manatoc on March 31 and visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday. It was a fun event the last time we visited. Looking for another great time.
We will stay in a cabin at Camp Manatoc. Sign up by March 7th.

"The Turtle" April 29-30:
This is a big event.  There will be nearly 900 people there hiking that weekend.  If you are not into backpacking, this is not a light trip.  This is a more strenuous trip and will need some time to prepare for this trip.  We will have some weekly meetings about the trip in March and April in preparation of the trip.  You need to sign up by the March 14th.  There are limited spaces.  The cost is $40.  More information can be found at the registration link:  https://scoutingevent.com/441-2023_Turtle

Water Treatment Plant visit:
The water treatment plant was a fun visit.  We learned a lot about how they process the water and we had some interesting conversations.
  
High Adventure 2024:
There will be a brief meeting at about 8 pm to discuss the high adventure options for next year.  I anticipate it will be more of an introduction, but wanted to make you aware of the short meeting for the Scouts and adults who are interested.  
Sea Base Scouts Interested:  Leighton Edwards, Jackson Bernhardt, Cooper Bernhardt, Loren Savage, Nicholas Buzuleciu, Garrett Mays, David Sweet, and Johnny King
Sea Base Adults Interested: Cory Edwards, Loren Savage, Jim Baughman, Kevin Mays and John King. 
Philmont Scouts Interested: Henry Ciocca, Carter Freeman, and Payton Holycross

Marengo Caves this weekend:
Last week only two Scouts turned in their forms for the trip.  There was also no discussion that I am aware of regarding food for this weekend.  We need the permission forms tomorrow night and also a menu for the weekend.  Saturday lunch will need to be something that you can bring with you in bags that you can pack that morning.  You will follow the trash in/trash out policy.  The cabin has a capacity of 14 people. We have 14 people going.  It is heated. You will need to change into your evening clothes or clothes for the day in the shower area which is not too far from the cabins. Do not pack for a winter campout this weekend.  Please bring a trash bag to put your dirty clothes in from the hike after we are gone all day. You will be wading, crawling and scrambling over the mountain of breakdown into Stewart Hall.  It is massive.

Do not plan to wear the shoes or clothes that you wear into the cave on Saturday.  You will have a bag with a change of clothes that you will have ready to take with you to the showers when we return to change into Saturday after the trip.  You will put the old clothes into the bag and we will add your name to the bag.  This will not be opened until you get home on Sunday.

 Water Treatment Plant visit:

This weekend is a trip to the Water treatment plant that Henry was able to schedule for us.  Use the link to sign up.  We will meet at the church at 10:20 and leave at 10:30.  We will visit between 11:00 and 1:00.  Bring a sack lunch.  I think we will be done by 1:30 back at the church building. 

High Adventure:
Use the signup genius to sign up for Sea Base or Philmont in 2024. You can sign up for one or both.  The one that has the most interest, we will be going to in 2024.  Sign up by February 14th.

Unit Leaders: Please insure you and your leaders / parents understand the leadership and accommodation requirements according to the current Guide to Safe Scouting.

Lodging/Cabin Accommodations

Whenever possible, separate cabins or lodging should be provided for male and female adults as well as for male and female youth. Where separate accommodations cannot be provided due to group size or limited availability, modifications may be made. Where completely separate accommodations are not available, additional supervision is required.

  • If adults and youth of the same gender occupy single-room accommodations, there must be a minimum of two adults and four youth, with all adults being Youth Protection trained.
  • Physical separation by other means, including temporary barriers or space, should be used only when no other arrangements are possible.
  • These modifications are limited to single-gender accommodations.

This will apply to cabins at all of our properties such as: Legion Lodge (MSR) and Walker (Camp Stambaugh).

This does allow male leaders to be in the same room as male youth as long as the above accommodations are met. This would NOT apply for Male leaders and Female youth or vice versa.
