February

Ohio State House Visit:  Troop 136 had a great visit to the Ohio State House on Saturday, 2/17/24.  There were 9 scouts and 6 adults who enjoyed a guided tour of the restored Ohio State House.  The beautifully done restoration cost $120 million dollars took 6 years and was completed in 1996.  The Troop got to visit the Ohio Senate room where the 33 Senators from Ohio meet to perform the duties of state government.  The tour went through the rotunda which is 67 feet from the skylight to the floor and has the Seal of Ohio in the center.  The tour ended in the State House Museum where historical artifacts are displayed.

Maple Syrup Fest:  The Simon Kenton Council Maple Syrup Fest is being held at Camp Lazarus on Saturday, 3/2/2024.  The Troop has elected to camp on Friday 3/1/24 until Sunday 3/3/2024.  We will be running the rope making station where visitors can learn how rope is made.  The Troop plans to camp in one of the cabins.  Cost for this event will be $30 and the uniform will be Field uniform.  Please sign up using the Sign-up Genius below by Tuesday 2/20/2024.

NYLT:   NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) is the first level of training available to the youth of Scouts BSA.  This course is youth led by scouts who have been through the course and have come back to share their knowledge and leadership skills with other youth.  There are three different courses:  a two-weekend course in April at Camp Lazarus, a one-week course in June at Camp Oyo and a two-weekend course in August at Camp Lazarus.  To qualify, a youth must be First Class rank, at least 13 years old and approved by the Scoutmaster.  Last year we had three of our youth complete these courses:  Zack Newcomb, Henry Ciocca and Nick Buzuleciu.  Nick has decided to come back and help to be on staff at the June Course.  This is a great opportunity to learn leadership skills that will be valuable to our scouts and our troop.   The cost is $250, however, if the scout earns their bolo, the troop will reimburse that cost. If you're interested or have any questions, please come see me.  The link for more information and to sign up is below.

Blackoot 44:  Blackfoot is an Enhanced Scoutmaster Fundamentals Course.  This course, however, is not just for Scoutmasters, it is for any adult who wants to learn the fundamentals of scouting and be able to help guide our youth.  Mr. Freeman has been on staff for this course and is going to staff the course this year.  The course covers one Saturday in March, and two weekends, one in March and one in April.  If you have any questions, please reach out to me or to Mr. Freeman.  For more information or to register, use the link below:

Participants will complete a ticket that consists of goals determined by the participants and once completed, will earn their beads.  Mr. Baughman has completed his ticket and will have his beading ceremony on Tuesday at our Court of Honor.  Our Committee Chair, Jason Savage, has also completed his ticket and will be scheduling his beading ceremony in the near future.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Below is the link to register:

Green Bar Training:  Green Bar, like Blackfoot, is an Enhanced Training for Adult Scout leaders.  This will be a two-weekend course in August and September.  Robin Bernhart has been on staff for this course and I will be on staff this Fall.  If you are in Scouts BSA or plan on transitioning to Scouts BSA, Green Bar is the place for you! Green Bar has been designated for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and Troop Committee Members. Green Bar is a hands-on format with 32 hours of lively and fun instruction over two weekends which earns certification in the Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster position & Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.  Green Bar emphasizes servant leadership and creates long lasting connections with other adult leaders and makes you part of our Green Bar Family.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Below is the link for more information or to register:

February

Court of Honor:  Thank you to everyone who attended the Court of Honor on January 30th.  It was great to see everyone supporting their scouts and to share in the pizza, salad and dessert potluck.  It was nice to get to chat with so many people and to share some time together.  Congratulations to all of the scouts who earned rank advancement, merit badges and other special awards.  Congratulations to Mr. Baughman on his Woodbadge beading ceremony.  The Woodbadge ticket is designed to help scouters focus on areas they think can help their units.  By strengthening their units, they strengthen scouting as a whole.

Scout Sunday:  Members of Troop 136 and Pack 136 attended the worship service at the First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, 2/4/24.  Members from both units greeted parishioners, passed out bulletins and collected the offering.  The partnership between The First Presbyterian Church and Scouting is a long one, with each group supporting the others.  This partnership was strengthened this week when the First Presbyterian Church approved the creation of a Girl Troop that will be numbered 7136 and a Venturing Crew that will be numbered 2136.  These units will be starting in the near future and the Troop 136 Committee will be overseeing all three units.  With the addition of two more units, the Troop Committee would like to invite the parents of any scout to come join our meetings.  We meet at 7pm on the first Sunday of each month at the First Presbyterian Church.

Tour of the Ohio State House:  This month's theme is Citizenship.  With that in mind, the PLC has arranged for the Troop to Tour the Ohio State House on Saturday, 2/17/2024.  The tour will last from noon to 2pm but the tour guide would like the troop to arrive at 11:45 at the State House.  Plan to meet at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church and travel together to the Ohio State House located at 1 Capital Sq, Columbus, Oh 43215.  There will be no cost for this event.  Please sign up on the BAND app if you plan to attend.  Permission slips will be available at the meeting on Tuesday or you can use the link below:

Maplefest 2024:  Maplefest 2024 will be on Saturday 2/4/2024 at Camp Lazarus.  The troop plans to camp in cabins at Camp Lazarus from Friday 3/1/2024 to Sunday 3/3/2024.  The troop normally helps run the rope making station that demonstrates how rope is made from twine.  The hours worked are considered service hours, which scouts need for rank advancement.  This is a great way for our troop to serve the scouting community and pay it forward to younger scouts who come out to enjoy a day at the Maplefest.  We need anyone interested in joining us at the camp to sign up using the sign up genius below by 2/20/2024 so that we can reserve a cabin.Cost of this event will be $20 for food plus the cost of the cabin rental, which has not been determined, but will not be more than $15 per person.

Shed update:  All three sheds have been delivered and are now secured.  In the near future, we will be asking for help in emptying the old sheds into the new sheds, tearing down the old sheds and placing them in a dumpster.  We will also need help moving gear from the trailers to the troop shed.
