Pack meeting at 6:30 tonight

Good morning!

I missed a detail for the Pack Meeting tonight.  It actually begins at 6:30 and not 7 pm.  I know that some of you have practice and are coming straight from those practices tonight.  The Webelos cafe will be open and will be serving hot dogs and chips in case you wanted to purchase something here and support the Pack.  I normally purchase something from the Webelos Cafe when I come to the Pack Meetings.  This is a fundraiser for the Webelos Scouts.

See you tonight!

3 Eagle Shootout

We had a fun time at the Three Eagle Shootout. While we were there we shot the rifle, shotgun and a chance to shoot an M-1 Grand. We also did a half hour of community service and went fishing while we were there. Brady caught a fish eating a fish using bait.
During late October we did community service project, we cut out, sanding and painting a Nativity scene for The First Presbyterian Church.
Troop 136 would also like to give our prayers and sympathy to the Hurt Family with the passing of their father Brad Callahan.

Next blog will be of Big Hiking Trip.

Yes we have a meeting this week along with the SPL elections

Hi again!

Please note that we will still meet on Tuesday, November 5th.  I had someone contact me asking if we were going to not have a meeting on Tuesday night because they saw that we were not going to have a service project between 6-7 pm.  At the committee meeting it was determined that my wording related to the meeting this week might be confusing.  I was referring to the service project when I stated that we would not meet for the service project this week.  Just know that we will be meeting because we have the SPL Elections this week on Tuesday night!!

SPL Elections: We have four scouts who were nominated by their fellow scouts to be Senior Patrol Leader.  There will be a time for nomination again this week before all of those nominated scouts will present to their fellow scouts on Tuesday night about the reasons why they want to be Senior Patrol Leaders.  Just so that you are aware, we are even using technology with this election again.  We will have no hanging chads...lol!  The results will be instantaneous.

Service Project:
November 5th (6 - 7 pm) We will NOT meet on this night!  We were able to cut, sand and paint the pieces last week.  Since the church will be used for voting, we will meet again on November 12th.  They look really nice!
November 12th (6 - 7 pm) We will meet to paint the other side of the nativity scene
The display will be setup at some point determined by the church.  I will share with you the details of the event when I find out.

See you on Tuesday night!

PLC Meeting, Service Project, SPL and Backpacking

Hi Troop 136!

PLC Meeting:
PLC meeting today at 4:30 pm.  Plan to be there to review the plan for November and plan the events in December.

Popcorn Kernel:
I just want to say thank to John for being our Popcorn Kernel again.  I really appreciate it a lot!  Thanks again!

Nominations for Senior Patrol Leader:
We will again take nominations for SPL in case a scout was not present last week and still wanted to be nominated.  We will vote on Tuesday night using the clickers.  Once the SPL is elected, he will choose his staff.  If you are running for SPL, be thinking about who you want to be with you on your PLC.  We will then take nominations for the Patrol Leaders on 11/12.  These votes will take place on 11/12.

Backpacking at Zaleski November 8 to November 10:
We are traveling to Zaleski next month for the backpacking trip.  This is a great event for first time scouts backpacking and for older scouts who have been backpacking.  Be prepared to take a short hike on 11/5.  All of the scouts will go on this short trip, whether they are going on the weekend trip or not.  Plan to bring some type of backpack for the event.
What if your scout does not have a backpack?  We have several of them that have been donated by previous scouts.  We will get these backpacks out  again at the meeting.  The scout will take the backpack they are borrowing with them pack their gear for the trip.  The backpacks will be available for you to borrow on a first-come, first-serve basis.
We will leave the church on Friday, November 8 at 5:30 and be back around noon to 1 pm on Sunday.

Here is a good place to see a backpacking list:  https://50miler.com/backpacking-pack-list/

If you are still reading this, thanks for sending me a message last week.  I will share those that responded at the committee meeting and we will have a drawing for the winner.

Funeral Service, Mount Oval, Service Project, Popcorn, SPL Nominations, PLC and Backpacking trip

Door greeter for Brad Callahan's viewing on 10/28:
It is with deep sadness that I share with you the passing of Brad Callahan, Anderson Hurt's dad.  Anderson is a scout in our troop that joined us this year from Pack 136.
Anderson's mom, Julie, has asked to have Troop 136 scouts participate during the showing (Monday evening from 4-8 pm) by opening the doors at the funeral home, The Spence-Miller Funeral Home, 2697 Columbus Street Grove City, OH.   Sign up here if your scout would like to participate: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050d49aca62fa1fe3-door1
Please remember this family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  Anderson was with us at the campout and he had a lot of fun.  Please contact me if you have any questions.
Yours In Scouting,
Phil

Mount Oval:
We had a great trip to Mount Oval this past weekend.  It was raining, but that did not dampen our spirits. We were able to learn how to cook using the patrol method and several scouts learned how to prepare food and storage of food.  The scouts received a tour of the building built in 1832.  They met and played games in a barn from 1835.  It was a great weekend camping trip!

Service Project:
I was asked by Kirk Bohanan if we could have the scouts create a lighted nativity scene for the First Presbyterian Church.  We met this past week and came up with plans and a timeline for the nativity scene.  We would meet on three separate occasions to complete the nativity scene:
October 29th (5 - 7 pm) We will meet to cut out the design and sand the design using power tools, if we have time we will paint the cutout nativity scene
November 5th (6 - 7 pm) We will meet to paint one side of the nativity scene
November 12th (6 - 7 pm) We will meet to paint the other side of the nativity scene
The display will be setup at some point determined by the church.  I will share with you the details of the event when I find out.

From our Popcorn Kerkel:
Popcorn Kernel Mr. Asendorf asks all scouts to start turning in any unsold popcorn Tuesday, Oct. 27th and to bring their sales sheets so that he can start getting scouts marked down for their sales. The last day of popcorn sales is Nov. 2 and all orders must be turned into Mr. Asendorf by Nov. 3. If you have question, please feel free to contact him personally at jasendorf@gmail.com or by text at 614-746-3746.  He would like to not have a repeat of last year where we turned in a significant amount of unsold popcorn at the last minute.

PLC Meeting:
PLC Meeting next Sunday at 4:30 pm!

Nominations for Senior Patrol Leader:
Last week I shared some items that you might want to review.  Talk with fellow scouts and see if they are interested in running for SPL.  We will take nominations for SPL this week and vote next week.  We will then take nominations on 11/5 and vote for the Patrol Leaders on 11/12.

Backpacking at Zaleski November 8 to November 10:
We are traveling to Zaleski next month for the backpacking trip.  This is a great event for first time scouts backpacking and for older scouts who have been backpacking.  Roland Guay and I will share how we pack with the troop on 10/29 and the scouts will be bringing their camping gear for a short hike on 11/5.
What if your scout does not have a backpack?  We have several of them that have been donated by previous scouts.  We will get these backpacks out and allow the scouts to try them on before the meeting on 10/29 and again after the meeting on 10/29.  The scout will take the backpack they are borrowing with them and bring it back the next week loaded for the campout on 11/5 for the walk around the city to find out if there are any issues with how they packed their gear.  It is a great way to find out if there are issues before we get on the trail.  The backpacks will be available for you to borrow on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If your scout wants to borrow one for this event, show up early on 10/29.
We will leave the church on Friday, November 8 at 5:30 and be back around noon to 1 pm on Sunday.

If you are still reading this, please send me a reply to let me know that you read all of this newsletter and you want to be entered into a drawing for actually reading the weekly email I send out.   I have prizes for those that actually read all of the information.  Please don't let others know.  I want to know how many actually read the email this week.  I will accept replies until the start of our Scout meeting on Tuesday 10/29.  I will share the prize at the start of the meeting.

Nerf guns: We had a great time last week with our Nerf guns last week.  Please plan to bring your Nerf gun(s) and a bright flashlight this week.  The flashlight will be used for the game.  Plan to shoot for prizes this week. This is the last week for Nerf guns.

Here is our meeting plans for the next two weeks:

Presentation for this week:
This week's presentations will be given by Steve Yuzka.  He is a person friend of my wife and I and is someone that is very well respected in the shooting community.  He is a co-owner of The Powder Room.  This past summer, he was the range event director for the NRA National Pistol Championships at Camp Perry. He oversaw the competitive shooting for four different ranges all week. I have asked that he give an overview of shooting sports to the scouts next week. If you have questions that you want to ask, please let me know so that I can let him know the question that you might have before the meeting.

Fall Camporee October 25 to October 27:
Adults: I would like to have one or two more adults on this campout.  I know that Darryl said he might be able to cook for the adults.  He always does a great job!

Scouts: You will need sign up as going to the event and one of the five options as well.
Options for the scouts:
1.  For those scouts who are working toward First Class, you have the opportunity to sign off on some of the requirements for First Class.

3. Wilderness Survival Merit Badge  - partial merit badge
4. Search/Rescue Merit Badge  - partial merit badge

What if your scout does not have a backpack?  We have several of them that have been donated by previous scouts.  We will get these backpacks out and allow the scouts to try them on before the meeting on 10/22 and 10/29.  They will be able to take them home and come back on 11/5 with their gear packed. The scout will take the backpack they are borrowing with them and bring it back the on 11/5 fully loaded with their camping gear for a hike during the meeting. This will help determine if there are any issues with how they packed their gear.  It is a great way to find out if there are issues before we get on the trail.  The backpacks will be available for you to borrow on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If your scout wants to borrow one for this event, show up early on 10/22 and 10/29, and bring them back ready to hike on 11/5.

Senior Patrol Leader
2097735_origWith three green bars behind the Scout emblem, the senior patrol leader’s shoulder patch symbolizes one of the oldest leadership positions in Scouting. The Boy Scouts of America has long recognized the senior patrol leader as the highest youth leadership position in a troop. They are the primary link between a troop’s Scouts and its adult leaders. They shoulder the responsibility for leading meetings of the troop and the patrol leaders’ council and provide valuable leadership in planning and carrying out the troop’s program of outdoor activities, service projects, and events.
Responsibilities
  • runs all troop meetings, events, activities, and the annual program planning conference
  • runs the patrol leaders’ council (PLC) meetings
  • appoints other troop junior leaders with the advice and counsel of the Scoutmaster
  • assigns duties and responsibilities to junior leaders
  • assists the Scoutmaster with junior leader training
  • sets a good example
  • wears the Scout uniform correctly
