January

 Hi Troop 136!

It sounds like the Klondike this past weekend was great.  I saw some pictures on the Band app.  I hope everyone had fun.  I think a few stayed overnight on Saturday, but have not heard if that happened.

High Adventure:
Use the signup genius to sign up for Sea Base or Philmont in 2024. You can sign up for one or both.  The one that has the most interest, we will be going to in 2024.  Sign up by February 14th.

Next events:
February 5th Scout Sunday
We will need to be at the church at 9:30.  This will last until about 11:30.   Since this is our meeting place, we need to show appreciation for the space.  We are allowed to meet at this location because of the generosity of the church.  Plan to spend some time on Sunday morning as a way to thank them for allowing us to use the space for our meetings. Sign up by Friday, February 3rd.

February 5th PLC Meeting:
Meet at the church at 3 pm.  This is the last meeting for training.  We will meet at 4:30 until the next PLC is elected.

We will stay in a cabin at Camp Manatoc. Sign up by March 7th.
Here is some additional information provided to me by Camp Manatoc:

Please review your reservation details and keep for your records.

Unit Leaders: Please insure you and your leaders / parents understand the leadership and accommodation requirements according to the current Guide to Safe Scouting.

The excerpt below can be found in its entirety online, at: https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/gss/gss01/

Lodging/Cabin Accommodations

Whenever possible, separate cabins or lodging should be provided for male and female adults as well as for male and female youth. Where separate accommodations cannot be provided due to group size or limited availability, modifications may be made. Where completely separate accommodations are not available, additional supervision is required.

  • If adults and youth of the same gender occupy single-room accommodations, there must be a minimum of two adults and four youth, with all adults being Youth Protection trained.
  • Physical separation by other means, including temporary barriers or space, should be used only when no other arrangements are possible.
  • These modifications are limited to single-gender accommodations.

This will apply to cabins at all of our properties such as: Legion Lodge (MSR) and Walker (Camp Stambaugh).

This does allow male leaders to be in the same room as male youth as long as the above accommodations are met. This would NOT apply for Male leaders and Female youth or vice versa.

Additional Guidelines Specifically for Cub Scout Unit-Coordinated Camping

  • Cub Scout camping is limited to their council’s designated locations with appropriate facilities.
  • Cub Scout camping is a family-centric program.
  • Cub Scout youth may tent with a parent or guardian as outlined in Scouting’s Barriers to Abuse.
  • Cub Scout youth should attend the camping event with their parent(s)/ guardian(s).
    • Lions and Tigers must have their adult partner present to take part.
    • For all other ranks: only in exceptional circumstances, a Cub Scout whose parent or legal guardian cannot attend a unit overnight camping trip may participate under the supervision of another registered adult member of the BSA, a parent of a Cub Scout who is also attending. The unit leader and a parent or legal guardian must agree to the arrangement, and all Youth Protection policies apply. At no time may another adult accept responsibility for more than one additional “non family member” youth.
    • Webelos and Arrow of Light Den Camping: Each Scout should attend with their parent(s) or guardian(s). A Webelos or Arrow of Light Scout whose parent or legal guardian cannot attend a den overnight camping trip may participate under the supervision of at least two registered leaders. The leaders and a parent or legal guardian must agree to the arrangement, and all Youth Protection policies apply.

January

 Hi Troop 136!

Happy New Year!

As we begin to start the new year, you might want to think about your goals for Scouting this year.  What do you want to do with your merit badges?  What ranks do you want to earn?  As you can see below, I set goals for myself.  I encourage you to do the same.

Tuesday, January 3:
We will begin discussing the music merit badge during the instruction this month.

Tuesday, January 10:
Court of Honor will be held for all Scouts and parents.  We need a Scout to be the emcee for the event.  Let me know if you are interested.  This is a requirement for the Communications Merit Badge.  There will be pictures offered by Mr. Baughman again this year.  This is a great way to document their time in Scouting.  He always does a great job!

Tuesday, January 10th Required Parent Meeting:
There will be a required meeting after the Court of Honor for all parents.  The pictures of the Scouts will be done during the parent meeting.

Church sleepover:
This weekend, the church is not available until after 8:30.  There is a church potluck on Friday night.  I will be asking the Troop tonight if they want to stay overnight on Saturday night.  If so, we will arrive a little later than normal and we can sleep in on Saturday morning since the Urban Air does not open until 11:00 am.  I will not be able to stay all day.  I can stay until about 2 pm.I will be checking with the other leaders to see if there will be adults.  I will know more later tonight.

UrbanAir:
Sky Rider, Ropes Course, Climbing Walls, Warrior Course, Battle Beam, Tubes - Indoor Playground, Climbing Hill, Basic Trampolines

Pie in the Face:
This is an annual tradition and an incentive for the Scouts to earn rank, merit badges and sell popcorn.  Every Scout who has completed three merit badges that are not Eagle required will be able to throw one pie, every Eagle required merit badge will be one pie each, every rank earned in 2022 will earn one pie throw and every $300 sold will earn one pie throw.  This will happen next week on December 20th.

Camp Oyo Backpacking Trip 11/11-13:
We had a fun backpacking event and everyone was able to earn the Polar Bear patch since we slept outside on Saturday night.  These will be awarded at the next Court of Honor.

NYLT:
The registration opened up and we have three Scouts registered now.  If you are First Class and above and want to participate, please let me know.

Recharter:
Recharter has been completed.  There will be some that may not be receiving an email after December.  If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know if you do not receive an email in January.

Summer Camp Camp Ransburg: June 25 - July 1:
We have a new campsite, Flatrock.  This was decided at the end of summer camp last year and is a really good spot near the main road and close to the showers.  Here is the message from Camp Ransburg:

Season’s Greetings from Camp Ransburg!

Thank you for registering your Troop for summer camp 2023. Whether your Troop is returning, or this will be their first time attending, we are excited for Scouts and leaders to experience all that Ransburg Scout Reservation has to offer!

If you have not already, now is the time to promote summer camp to your Scouts and families and get a commitment from them.  A great promotional tool is the new camp experience guide (attached.)  Inside this guide Scouts and adults can learn about the programs offered at Ransburg, as well as information to plan for camp. The 2023 camp fees have been published on the event page. Please start communicating the fees to your families now so that they can plan and prepare to make payments on time.

We are excited to announce that camp is going all inclusive. Much like an all-inclusive resort this means all standard programs and merit badges are included at no additional cost. Special programs or trips may have an onsite fee. This means no more standing in line at the trading post to buy merit badge kits or program tickets and more time having fun.

Over the next six months, we will be sending emails to help keep your unit up to date with important information and deadlines.  Please take a moment to verify that the person listed as the registration contact is indeed the correct person to receive these emails. If there is a volunteer who you think would benefit from receiving monthly emails, you can include their email address under the registration contact tab.

Thank you for putting your trust in us to provide your Scouts with a top notch and unparalleled summer camp experience. If you have any questions about your unit’s registration or the content in this email, please do not hesitate to contact me.

From all of us at the Crossroads of America Council, we wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and happy holiday!

Three Eagles Shootout October 9th:
Below is the sign up genius.  The cost is $10.  PLC decided no camping on Saturday night.  Be at the church at 7:15.  We will leave at 7:30.  We will arrive back at about 3:00 pm.  Bring your own lunch.  The PLC did not want to plan a lunch so pack your own.  I need to know if you are coming this Tuesday!
October 14-16 Campout
We still don't have much time to plan this event, so bring your ideas to the PLC tonight and let them know!   This campout will be at First Baptist Church on Orders Road in Grove City.  The PLC did not finalize any plans!  What do you want to do?  Let the SPL know!  I need to know this week what your plans are for the campout! Meal plan?  So much that has not been discussed or decided!

If you are a First Class Scout and want to attend NYLT In 2023, please look at the dates and let me know.  Registrations fill up soon.  Normally the spring NYLT dates fill up very quickly.  The spring dates are normally taken in December or January and the summer dates are normally gone in January and February.  Let us know and you will put up a $100 deposit and you will receive the $100 deposit for attending and completing your bolo once you are done with both.  This is a great leadership opportunity for Scouts.

Scouts participating in other Scouting activities:
I strongly encourage Scouts to sign up and go to events, even if we do not go as a Troop.  I have participated in many events that we have signed up for on our own and attended.  You can participate in any events that are offered through our council and/or other councils.  I think these activities are great and if you are able, I encourage you to go and create your own adventure. If you go on your own, please do so knowing that you represent the Troop.  If you are joining another Troop for an event, please let the Scoutmaster know before attending.
